My name is Joal Ortiz, and I’ve been building, fixing, and scaling brokerages long before it became a service I offer.
Before stepping into the insurance industry in 2013, I spent six years in IT support, learning how to analyze broken systems and rebuild them to work better — a skillset that’s surprisingly rare in this business.
Once I entered insurance, I worked every role from agent to COO. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t — and let me tell you, most brokerages are set up to fail. No leadership. No structure. Agents being short-changed. Owners trying to cut corners and wondering why their business isn’t growing.
Early on, I spent three years at a startup, where I was a one-man team writing 8-10 policies a day in the first month. Within 6 months, I built that into a 12-agent team. The following year, I was promoted to District Manager, running two locations, 35 agents, and three managers. We were writing over $1 million in premium per month.
Then came my biggest challenge yet — a brokerage losing over $150,000 in premium every month with zero growth. Four top agents before me tried and failed to turn it around — all gone in less than six months.
Month one, I was on my own.
By month two, I was building a team.
By month three, I had six agents and took full control of the operation.
Today, that same team writes over $400,000 a month in premium and nets over $60,000 a month in profit, after all expenses and commissions.
